Pupusas are a traditional dish originating from El Salvador, but they are also popular in neighboring countries such as Guatemala. They are made from a tortilla made of masa (corn dough) filled with a variety of fillings such as cheese, refried beans, pork, and/or other ingredients. The filled tortilla is then cooked on a griddle until it is crispy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside. Pupusas are typically served with a tangy and slightly spicy tomato sauce, and they are often accompanied by a side of curtido, a pickled cabbage and carrot slaw. Pupusas are a staple street food in Guatemala and are also popular in other Central American countries.
